The castle looks spectacular as it sits on a rocky outcrop on the Scottish coast , a mile from Stonehaven .In olden days the castle was impossible to breach because the only way in is through a small tunnel at the foot of the castle which was easy to defend . The castle looks spectacular in its natural setting in the middle of 3 lochs , surrounded by mountains.The castle was built in the 13th century . Eilean Donan means small island of Donan , a religious figure . In the 18th century the castle was bombarded by 3 English frigates and almost totally destroyed . In 1914 rebuilding began .
